Ce livre raconte l’histoire d’un fils d’ouvrier Julien Sorel qui veux s’élever socialement. Il n’aime pas les travaux manuels et donc va vouloir devenir religieux car c’était un des seuls moyens de monter dans la société. Mais il est engagé comme précepteur des enfants de Mr de Rênal , le maire de Verrières. Il séduisit alors Mme de Rênal et bien d’autres femmes pour son ascension sociale. On voit donc un portrait de comment était la France en 1830, lors de la Restauration dans ce livre qui finit mal. Ce livre bien qu’il est plutôt bien écrit, est assez ennuyant dans les 300 pages du milieu. Le personnage de Julien Sorel est aussi un peu bizarre : pendant tout le livre, il essaye de s’élever socialement de façon égoïste (il ne milite pas pour un changement dans la société, il veut juste que les conditions de vie à lui-seul s’améliore en séduisant des femmes par intérêt) mais à la fin il parle d’une génération ouvrière qui peut enfin s’éduquer et se libérer mais est réprimée et il prend comme exemple sa propre situation. Il parle de sa situation comme un mouvement collectif et se montre comme un représentant des ouvriers alors qu’il s’en foutait d’eux pendant tout le livre ! Donc je conseillerais ce livre peut-être pour ceux qui s’intéressent à cette époque, mais c’est quand même le genre de livres à rallonge que l’on est obligé de lire à l’école et que personne qui les lit n’aime particuliérement si ce n’était pas dans un cadre scolaire.
